  1. Book: Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Musing Response: "It was a pleasure to burn." pg. 3. I chose this quote because I found it really weird and different that he enjoys burning things (later I found out books) so much. Personally, I don't think burning things, especially books, is fun.

Musing Response: "I'm afraid of children my own age. They kill each other. Did it always use to be that way? My uncle says no. Six of my friends have been shot in the last year alone. Ten of them died in car wrecks. I'm afraid of them..." pg. 30. I think this quote is terrible! I can't believe that (this book takes place in the future) this could ever happen. I would be scared, too, if this was the case at our school, and was considered normal.

Question: Where did Clarisse go? Why wasn't she waiting for Montag on the 8th day?

  2. Book: The Miracle Worker by William Gibson

pg 32: "KATE: Is it possible, even? To teach a deaf-blind child half of what an ordinary child learns- has that ever been done?" Opinion: I agree with Kate that it is a very daunting task to try to communicate with a little girl who can neither see nor hear, especially because she has lived her entire life so far without anybody being able to reach her or talk to her on her level. She knows nothing about the world except what she can feel. It will be challenging for Annie to make Helen understand what she is signing into her hands in sign language, and even though Helen is a very bright child, the task will take a long time.

pg 40: "KELLER: Here's a houseful of grown-ups can't cope with the child, how can an inexperienced half-blind Yankee school-girl manage her?" Opinion: I disagree with Captain Keller. I think Annie has an advantage over them because even though she is young and hasn't had a lot of education, she has been blind herself and knows what it is like. She knows a little of how Helen is perceiving the world and that will help her teach her. She also has had a background of working with deaf and blind children at her school, which the Kellers have not.

Discussion Question: Why does Annie begin by teaching Helen language?
