  1. Pg 55: "She looked like she might have a pretty good idea what a bastard she was the mother of. But you can't always tell- with somebody's mother, I mean. Mothers are all slightly insane." Opinion: I agree with Holden in that parents are usually biased in their impression of their children. Who a person is at home doesn't always correspond with who they are at school, either. I think parents usually think very highly of their children.

Pg 87: "After I'd told her I had to meet somebody, I didn't have any goddam choice except to leave... people are always ruining things for you." Musing: I don't think Holden is right in saying this -- it was his own fault that he lied to her. He shouldn't blame her for trying to be friendly, because he refused and made up an excuse that wasn't even true. Now he is having to pay for his lies.

Clarifying question: Why does Holden want to know so much about where the ducks in Central Park go in the winter?

  2. Page 66 "...I damn near gave my kid sister Phoebe a buzz, though. I certainly felt like talking to her on the phone. Somebody with sense and all." Musing: I can understand where Holden is coming from. Right now he is lonely and confused and needs someone who understands him. Phoebe and Holden obviously have a good relationship and it would be good for Holden to be reassured that he wasn't all alone.
Page 80 "I think it's because sometimes when he plays, he sounds like the kind of guy that won't talk to you unless you're a big shot." Opinion: Holden analyzes a lot of people and I think that snotty people, whether or not this piano player was snotty, bother him because they are fake.

Question: Why is he going to crappy bars where he knows he'll feel more lonely?

  3. "...puddles in the street with gasoline rainbows."(pg.122) Musing: I thought this was a really cool way to describe the oil in puddles on the street. I totally know what the author meant by that and could picture it.

"Even though it was Sunday and Phoebe wouldn't be there with her class or anything, and even though it was so damp and lousy out, I walked all the way through the park over to the Museum of Natural History." (pg. 119) Musing: I liked this quote because it shows that Holden thinks about Phoebe wherever he goes.

Question: When is Holden going to contact Jane? Its taken him awhile...

  4. " 'Why not? Why the hell not?' 'Stop screaming at me, please,' she said. Which was crap, because I wasn't even screaming at her." (pg. 132) Musing: I think he WAS screaming at her, he just didn't realize it. I feel really bad for Sally Hayes because Holden was really rude to her.

"...we were the worst skaters on the whole goddam rink...Old Sally's ankles kept bending in till they were practically on the ice." (pg. 129) Musing: I found this part really funny, and since I used to figure skate I could really picture them skating on the ice and embarrassing themselves.

Why does Holden care so much about the ducks?

  5. p.g 36 ..."neither of us felt like sitting around on our ass all night. I asked Mal if he minded if Ackley came along with us. The reason I asked was because Ackley never did anything on Saturday night, except stay in his room...." Even though Holden lies and is some what insecure, I think that he still has a soft side towards Ackley. Holden may come off as a kind jerk, but on the inside he is filled with guilt.
p.g 125 ..."when we were coming out of this big clitch, I told her I loved her and all. It was a lie of course, but the thing is I meant it when i said it. I am crazy. I swear to God I am." Holden is really contradictory, its almost as if he is in an argument with himself.

Why does holden lie to himself?
